Advanced Comprehension Skills – Linked Extracts: Book 1

Designed to help students develop their comprehension skills and prepare for the NSW Selective Test

In this book, designed for Years 5 and 6, students will read four passages linked by theme and then answer a series of comprehension questions to test their understanding. Featuring a range of engaging and challenging texts from various genres of writing, students will need to apply higher-order comprehension skills, including summarising, comparing and contrasting, drawing conclusions, understanding author’s purpose and craft, finding the main idea and inferencing.

An introduction provides tips on how to approach the questions and what to look out for. This is followed by 20 stimulating units of work, each containing 10 advanced comprehension questions. The end of the book contains full explanations for each question so that students can carefully review and understand their mistakes.
